So this Saturday, as most of you know, Pieta House are organising their annual Darkness Into Light Fundraiser. Darkness Into Light is taking place in over 150 places worldwide. The point of the walk is to raise awareness and funds so that Pieta House can continue to offer a free counselling service to those who have been suffering from suicidal thoughts, self harm and those who have lost someone to suicide.
I can’t remember hearing the word ‘suicide’ until I was around fourteen. I had no idea that people could suffer so much that they would take their own lives. Now there are cases where people who are younger than that are taking their own lives. Suicide needs to be talked about. It needs to be talked about in schools so that young people realise the effect it has on the lives of the people they leave behind. It needs to be talked about so that someone who feels suicidal knows that they can talk to someone – a teacher, a friend, their family, anyone. It needs to be talked about so that when people get to a dark stage in their life they know that when they get through it there will be light.
It can be so easy to insult someone when you’re mad at them. It’s so easy to hurt people and their feelings when you’re angry. But it’s just as easy to be nice to people and to just think about the effect of what you say can have on someone before you speak. Life is way too short and we all have so much ahead of us. Don’t be someone’s darkness, don’t be your own darkness. Be the light for someone else, light up your own life and the lives of the people around you.
Suicide should never be an option for anyone and the more awareness that is raised and the more free counselling that is there then more people will get better.
I know that life can be so hard and you can be faced with the worst possible scenarios. But that’s why we have our family, our friends, teachers, counselors. Just like all of these people are there when we have something to celebrate, they are all there to help us on the days that feel impossible. We’re all here to help each other through the worst things that life throws at us.
So no matter how lonely you might feel sometimes, you’ll never be alone. There are over 130,000 people who took part in Darkness Into Light last year and all of them walked to show their support. To show that they are there whenever you feel like the whole world is against you.
“….all alone or not, you gotta walk ahead. The thing to remember is if we’re all alone, then we’re all together in that too”.
